2x2 rib sampleTwo by two rib (2X2 rib) is a very special rib. It is the most stretchy rib. Be very careful when doing the first row so that you maintain the pattern. Once the pattern is established, just work the pattern as the stitches present themselves on the left needle. Knit the knits and purl the purls.

back side of 2x2 ribWith it slightly stretched out, it is easy to see the purl bumps. You should be able to see that this image showing the backside of the sample would start with a purl two, while the first image would start with a knit two.

Which is the right side? The pattern will probably tell you what they think is correct. It is generally easier to hide a seam when you are joining the purl stitches as those purl stitches recede.

The stretchiness of 2x2 rib makes it great for children's necklines where a larger than normal amount of stretch is needed. It is also frequently used in socks, particularly for someone with wide feet, large ankles, and or larger than average legs.
