Shawl using short rows to develop patterningShort rows are rows that are not knit all the way across. This is a frequent occurence for beginners when they stop in the middle of a row and put the work down. When ready to knit again, choosing the wrong knitting direction causes one side to be two rows longer than the unknit side. This is introduced in Which Way am I Knitting.

But this mistake can be used effectively in shaping garment pieces. Using short rowing progressively over a number of rows will cause a triangle to develop. This is the basis of the shaping used in the dish cloth pattern.

The shawl is just a two row stripe using a solid black and a hand dyed variegated yarn. The short rows are arranged so that blobs form rather than real triangles. The hard part of this pattern was being absolutely spot on when counting stitches so that the blobs were all in the correct place. Markers along the left edge helped maintain that stitch count.

The pattern is by MarinJA Knits called Papillon|Butterfly in Urth Uneek Fingering  and Urth Harvest fingering yarns. (I had so much fun that I knit three more and have left over yarn for a fourth!)
