Adding new yarn happens for one of two reasons, either you have finished a ball of yarn or you wish to join in a new color.

If you are nearing the end of a ball of yarn and are working on a flat piece, it is best to start the new yarn at the beginning of a row. Simply drop the old yarn, allowing a bit for seaming or working in the ends later, simply start working with the new yarn. The edge stitches will get larger but will be fixed when the garment is seamed.

If the edge is a finished as in a scarf, is there a texture change some where across the row? A join between patterns would naturally help hide that new yarn join and provide some hiding spots for weaving in ends.

Sometimes you are stuck with needing to join mid row because you are short of yarn, working in the round with no real end of row, or are just working in a large area of stockinette stitch.
