You probably learned whip stitch as a young child. It is a very easy way of joining two pieces of fabric. The needle goes in the top of the fabric on the first piece near the edge and comes up from the bottom of the second piece near the edge. This repeats from the first piece to the second piece until the join is complete.

Whip stitch is great for joining crochet pieces. Whip stitch is normally a poor way of seaming most other items. It is most often used for decorative effects and is a great way of embellishing an item.

Because the dish cloth is garter stitch, the whip stitches get lost in the fabric. Whip stitch makes a perfect seam for a beginner that wants to finish an item.
