The "make one" (M1) is an easy increase with several variations. Generally the next version "with the twist" is the more commonly used one. This "no twist" version does produce a hole. This hole is smaller than the hole produced by a Yarn Over (YO). Both can be used for lace and buttonholes.
Teaching the "make one with no twist" first allows the student to learn which strand of yarn is to be picked up.
This increase is done between a stitch on the right needle and a stitch on the left needle. Pull the needles slightly apart. You should see a horizontal strand between the two needles. Pick this stand up and place it on the left needle with the rightmost part of the strand on the front of the needle. Now knit that new picked up strand.
After a practice row or two, do one row with a YO part way across, knit a few stitches ,and then do a M1. Finish the row and do several more rows of stockinette stitch. Now compare the sizes of the M1 and the YO.
