Reverse Cast On

The Cast On covered in Lesson 1 - Knit Stitch has a right and wrong side.
The Cast On covered in Lesson 1 - Knit Stitch has a right and wrong side. When you turn the work around after the cast on row, you will see a row of purl bars facing you. Most patterns assume you are knitting that first row.

What you decide to do, knit or purl, will affect how the edge behaves and looks. Because we are using a rolled edge for the hat, emphasizing the roll will be helpful. So the easy thing to do in the hat pattern is to just purl that first row. This gives a softer edge that will curl a bit better.

Sometimes it is critical that that first row is knitted. While there are lots of ways of casting on. my first choice is simple and easy to remeber. By simply reversing the hand that is holding the yarn, reverses the knit and purl sides of the yarn.
